Conference Preview Overview

Dear ASAI Members and Guests,

I invite everyone to attend the AIP 25 conference in Madison this October.  We are finalizing the details of what promises to be an informative and exciting series of days.  Madison is a unique state capital city of over 200,000, sometimes referred to as “78 square miles surrounded by reality;” the plastic pink flamingo was recently voted by the city council as the official bird of Madison, food carts are reviewed alongside restaurants (including their architectural features) and there are so many different countercultures that it sometimes seems that mainstream culture is the true counterculture.  What this means for conference attendees is that there is a rich street oriented cultural life supporting a myriad of dining and entertainment possibilities that appeal to those with both empty and full pocketbooks.  The retreat in Milwaukee following the conference is an opportunity to experience whole districts on the National Register of Historic Places, a vibrant night life and architectural gems that include Santiago Calatrava’s addition to Saarinen’s Milwaukee Art Museum.

Conference highlights include the AIP 25 exhibition and tour at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin, hands on workshops in hybrid, digital and traditional media, a series of presentations of diverse strategies for hybrid illustration, a symposium that looks at visualizing intangibles, and sketch tours that could give a week’s worth of sketching opportunities but regrettably last only a few hours.  One of the first things on the agenda is making the conference affordable for as many people as possible, so the lodging and venues have been chosen with that goal in mind.  The second thing on the agenda is making sure that there are ample opportunities to learn and be inspired through hands on workshops, focused presentations and the opportunity to interact with a variety of architectural settings and environments. The third thing on the agenda is to keep things close together while offering a variety of options.  And, of course, the pumpkin carving contest initiated at the Atlanta conference makes another appearance, offering artists the opportunity to show their creativity in something besides two dimensions.

The conference hotel is the Inn on the Park, which is across from the beautifully restored state capital building and within walking distance of countless restaurants, nightspots, museums and architectural gems.  The base single room rate includes free airport shuttle and internet, which is detailed on the lodging tab, along with information on making reservations today, if you like.  The Design Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is cosponsoring the conference, so the presentation rooms and some of the events are in university facilities, where the costs are lower as well.

I look forward to seeing you in Madison.  The official registration site will be online shortly, but in the meantime browse this preview site and start to decide which activities you will choose to select. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Regards,
Mark Nelson
2010 ASAI President

Transportation

Madison has an active airport, with over 85 commercial flights leaving and arriving daily.  Recently remodeled, the materials and detailing of the airport are reminiscent of the local Prairie Style.  Nonstop connections include New York, Denver, Atlanta, Detroit, Washington DC, and other others.  For those who would like to fly to Chicago and take a bus to Madison (this may be more economical for international flights), there are regular bus runs from O’Hare by Van Galder Bus several times a day for under $30 one way, and those who might wish to rent a car at O’Hare and drive from Chicago can expect to spend about 2 ½ hours or less on the road.  Milwaukee is about 1 ½ to 2 hours from Madison by car, and there are also regularly scheduled commuter buses running back and forth between Milwaukee and Madison every few hours.

Those arriving in Madison by airplane and staying at the Inn on the Park can use the complimentary hotel shuttle by calling after going through baggage claim.  The trip usually takes about 20 minutes, although those going to the airport should allow extra time for possible train crossings or occasional heavier traffic.

People arriving by automobile can find directions at the Inn on the Park website.  Since Madison’s downtown is an isthmus surrounded by lakes, it is a good idea to use a map or a good GPS, as at times you can find yourself going in circles.  Once you are here, of course, you can walk just about everywhere on the conference schedule.

Those going on the retreat can fly into Madison and back out through Milwaukee’s Mitchell Field, or could also choose to make any of their connections from Chicago.

Robert is an experienced teacher, currently teaching a number of classes at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University.

Presentations:
The Future Meets the Past

These four presenting  illustrators, who are working professionals used to dealing with deadlines and client requirements, have each developed creative methods that integrate the tools of the future with the lessons of the past, sometimes making it difficult to detect their methods and processes when looking at the finished work.  Whether you are a tried and true watercolorist, a high powered digital processor or someone in between, this series presents concrete solutions to timeless illustration challenges.  Collectively, their work suggests that it is creativity and skill rather than media that sets an illustrator apart.

1:30-3:05

Robert Frank,
Elizabeth Day

Pyle Center

Robert Frank’s work is a delicate meeting of the future and the past.  Robert has spent over ten years using primarily digital tools to create illustrations that have the qualities of a watercolor or pencil drawing, influenced by the 15 years he spent honing his traditional rendering skills.  Robert will discuss the relationship between the tools he uses and what his eye wants to see in the finished product. About Robert Frank

Elizabeth Day is known primarily for her work over two decades as an award winning watercolor illustrator, and continues to rely on ancient but tried and true brush techniques as her primary tools.  However, Elizabeth has also integrated digital tools into her technique as a way to better serve her clients for things such as revisions and tight deadlines.  Elizabeth will discuss creative ways that digital tools can enhance illustration practice, as well as the ideas that drive her illustration.  About Elizabeth Day/

Ana Carolina Monnaco is a Hugh Ferriss Prize winner and multidisciplinary artist and architect who continually works back and forth between the future and the past.  Ana’s practice includes architectural illustration, conceptual architectural design, book illustration, graphic design and photography.  For architectural illustrations, she commonly creates a traditional ink drawing and then adds color digitally.  Ana will discuss her workflow as well as the common threads that tie her practice together. About Ana Carolina Monnaco

Paul “Steve” Stevenson Oles FAIA is a Hugh Ferriss Prize winner and cofounder of the ASAI who has been called the “dean of architectural illustrators.”  He is a practicing illustrator, architect and educator whose career has spanned almost five decades.  Steve is best know for his highly faithful colored pencil illustration, but in recent years has began focusing on hybrid techniques that build on the strengths of digital modeling while at the same time utilizing Steve’s emphasis on observed and studied reality.  Steve will discuss his hybrid methods as well as the motivations, pitfalls and joys that accompany the creative illustration process. About Steve Oles

Symposium:
Visualizing Intangible Realities

The name change from the American Society of Architectural Perspectivists to the American Society of Architectural Illustrators did not only mark the passing of a memorable acronym; it also inadvertently marked the passing of the guild-like secrets of perspective from the architectural illustrator to the general public by way of digital technology.  Just as the advent of photography forced visual artists to ponder their role in society, the advent of digital modeling and rendering forces professional architectural illustrators to ponder their value in the marketplace.  While one standard response is that a skilled illustrator adds intangible elements that others cannot, it is difficult to find a book or resource that focuses on what those intangibles are or on ways to add them to an illustration.  This session begins to fill that gap as presenters discuss the way that intangible realities have been foregrounded in their work.  Each person has at one time or another had multiple roles as an artist, designer, photographer and/or illustrator, and all use the same tools as architectural illustrators, but with somewhat different goals.

1:30-3:05

Mark Nelson,
Michael Jablonski

Pyle Center

Mark Nelson has had multiple careers as an illustrator, an artist, an architect, and interior designer, and is currently an Associate Professor in the Design Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Mark has received numerous AIP awards for both commercial and self commissioned illustrations, began working professionally as an illustrator in 1985 with pen and ink and more recently with digital media, and for several years now has also been showing his work in galleries.  He will discuss the transition of the illustrator’s role from that of perspective expert to visualizer of intangibles, focusing on ways that illustrators have historically addressed those intangibles.

Michael Jablonski has been a professional industrial designer for over 30 years, and for over ten years has also focused on creating fine art, in the process earning an MFA.  Illustration is an important part of Michael’s industrial design work, and he has made the transition from tradition to digital media while maintaining a high level of expertise.  Most recently, Michael’s fine art work has included large scale (over 5’ square) charcoal and pastel drawings that address intangible feelings while exploring the tension between reality and imagination.  Michael will discuss the relationship between his industrial design work, his illustration work and his fine art work, and the way that he makes his images communicate intangibles.

Stephen Hilyard,
Willem van den Hoed

Pyle Center

Stephen Hilyard has had multiple career roles that include an artist, an architect, a fabricator and design engineer for artists such as Jeff Koons, and an architectural model builder.  Stephen is currently Associate Professor, Digital Arts, in the Art Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Stephen’s current work is art that is directly focused on intangible realities, translating the nature of the 19th Century concept of The Sublime to the context of today’s world.  Consisting of digital animation, digitally processed video, digitally processed photography, and installation, Stephen’s work among other things explores the tension between the “lie” of the image and our willingness to accept a digital reality as truth.  Stephen will discuss his work and his visually driven concepts.
About Stephen Hilyard

Willem van den Hoed has had multiple careers as an artist, an architect, an architectural illustrator and as an educator.  Willem has received numerous AIP awards for his illustrations, and taught most recently at the Willem de Kooning Academy and the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam in his native Netherlands.  Willem’s work since 2000 has been primarily fine art photography that explores the intangible qualities of natural landscapes, buildings and spaces as well as the relationships between and with the people who inhabit them.  He moves back and forth fluidly between traditional ink sketching and digitally processed realities, pursuing studies of reality and our perceptions that transcend media.

The Main Lounge is a beautifully restored historical setting for recounting the day's insights as well as looking at some of the sketch tour results.  Members and conference attendees are invited to bring small pieces of work from the sketch tour or from home to be auctioned off during this popular AIP convention tradition.  In addition to providing the opportunity to acquire original art from our distinguished membership, the event serves as a fund raiser for the organization.  This year, we hope to include photos from the sketch tours for auction as well, since so many of our members are accomplished photographers.

3rd Street
Milwaukee Downtown Riverwalk

Explore Milwaukee’s Old World 3rd Street, a window into the German-American 19th Century, and sample one of its many restaurants.  For a larger meal of fine German dining, Mader’s restaurant has been serving food for 105 years.  In Wisconsin, the whole family might go to a bar for dinner, as bars often serve great food, and there are many of those within a one block stretch.  Restored buildings, restaurants and stores, including treats such as the Usinger Sausage factory and store, make for an interesting evening two blocks from the hotel.  Afterwards, follow the Downtown Riverwalk to get a feel for the lay of the land and see the night lights reflected in the water.

Dames at Sea is a musical parody of the grand and glorious Busby Berkeley movie musicals of the 1930s. Calamity strikes when a group of performers, preparing for their upcoming show, needs to find a new venue because their theater is demolished. The show’s songwriter, Dick, happens to be a sailor who offers up his boat after being persuaded by leading lady and diva, Mona. Ruby, a sweet small-town girl with plans to make it big on Broadway, is the chorus girl who saves the day. Dames at Sea charms and delights with comedy, love songs and rollicking tap numbers. It’s the perfect beginning to Skylight’s 51st season! Music: Jim Wise Book and Lyrics: George Haimsohn and Robin Miller Director: Bill Theisen
